THE DRIVER If you follow EuroSports
coverage of EuroBOSS you may have heard commentators saying "where did Max I am sorry to say it was not all done in two years, it was more like this: My first ride on a motorcycle was at the age of 7, but before this I was fascinated with all mechanical objects. In 1990 I went to test ride a motocross quad and got sponsored by the garage who were selling it. Three years of racing quads netted 3 championship wins. This was followed by Speedway and circuit racing on Motorcycles. Concurrently, while filling in the off-season I raced downhill skiing and even horses. I also pieced together a beautiful Ferrari 330P4 which you will see on the pages of this site. During this time I taught myself how to raise sponsorship and focus on goals to achieve my dreams. My next aim was to drive a Formula One car. In 1999 I was lucky enough to set an outright lap record on a Jonathon Palmer track day. Following this Jonathon Palmer entered Max in two races in a Formula Palmer Audi single-seater, in which he was placed second both times. Sky Sports later reported that "Max embarrassed more professional drivers in his first two races than most drivers did in a lifetime". Mansell Motor-Sport and max Wakefield teamed up in the year 2000 and planned a route to drive an F1 car in EuroBOSS. A season of trackcraft in a Honda F600 was followed in 2001 by moving up to EuroBOSS F3000 which is the penultimate step towards EuroBOSS F1. To do this we teamed up with our current MotorSport Partners ZIG-ZAG Rolling Papers. The F3000 car had been Christian Fittipaldi's own championship winning car. The 2001 season saw the new "Team Mansell Zig-Zag" have some great racing, getting a lap record at Rockingham en route. For the end of the 2001 season we decided to test race an F1 car at Le mans. We used Patrick Tambay's Lola Beatrice. The car was reputed to have about 1000bhp in qualifying trim. We qualified on pole by 11 seconds and within 15 laps had lapped everyone in the field. In 2002 we stepped up to a Benetton 197. 780bhp in 500kg was the finishing school that any driver dreams of. This was a new arena and we were, and still are, all learning. We steadily rose through the field and ended the season out qualifying supremo driver Arri Toivenen. ------------------------------ Concurrently Max was lucky enough to race a P1 Ferrari owned by racing legend David Piper. Despite a bad start that saw the car slip to 26th, ultimately the car carved back through the field to take second place. During the off-season David Piper runs a series called International Sports Prototypes. The series is run over a number of races in South Africa. During the second year of racing in International Sports Prototypes, Max was lucky enough to win the series in 2002. A series of problems in 2003 meant that we were not victorious but we did win our first race of 2003 by a led of 45 seconds. |
